Breast implants are medical devices that may be filled with either a saline solution (sterile salt water) or silicone gel. Both types of implants are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been rigorously researched, tested, and reviewed by an independent panel of physicians for safety. Saline implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women 18 years of age and older, whereas silicone implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women 22 years of age and older. Both types of implants may be recommended at a younger age if used for reconstruction purposes.
During surgery, the implant can be placed either under the breast tissue itself or beneath both the breast tissue and the pectoralis muscle. The muscle provides an extra layer of tissue between the implant and the skin to provide a more natural appearance.
