Breast augmentation is also known as “augmentation mammoplasty.” It is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. Some of the reasons why women choose breast augmentation are:

• To enlarge breasts or enhance the contour of breasts in a woman who feels her breasts are smaller than desired
• To restore lost volume to breasts after weight loss or pregnancy
• To achieve better breast symmetry when breasts develop unequally
• To improve the appearance of a breast or create the appearance of a breast that has been removed or surgically altered, suffered from trauma, or is congenitally missing

The choice of implant, implant size, shape, and other features will be determined by you and Dr. Lehfeldt during your consultation based on your breast anatomy, body type, and your desired increase in size.

Breast implants are medical devices that may be filled with either a saline solution (sterile salt water) or silicone gel. Both types of implants are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been rigorously researched, tested, and reviewed by an independent panel of physicians for safety. Saline implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women 18 years of age and older, whereas silicone implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women 22 years of age and older. Both types of implants may be recommended at a younger age if used for reconstruction purposes.

During surgery, the implant can be placed either under the breast tissue itself or beneath both the breast tissue and the pectoralis muscle. The muscle provides an extra layer of tissue between the implant and the skin to provide a more natural appearance. Dr. Lehfeldt can determine which patients are better candidates for which implant location
